Forest Garden
The aim with this method of planting is to bring together trees, shrubs, and perennials with bulbs and climbers to create a stable and balanced ecological system. Each plant is selected for a purpose, whether it be an edible, a source of dye, a resource for pollinators, or a fixer of specific nutrients in the soil.
For Bella, the aesthetic value of this approach holds as much appeal as its ecological function. She has used it to soften the boundaries of the Meadow Orchard, moving away from the abruptness of hedging to a more natural and organic edge.
The shrubs are maturing and we are gradually finding what is happy where within the complex ground cover layers. As the trees grow and cast more shade the planting will evolve to suit the amount of light available.
